Wednesday March 6th was just another ordinary day for Marty and I. I had my usual weekly appointment with my doctors to follow up on how the boys were growing. Marty fortunately was able to make it to this specific appointment. He occasionally had to work or had class and was unable to make it with me to all of my appointments.. It was a good thing he was there too because I literally left the doctors office and went straight to Labor and Delivery through the doctors secret passage! I was dilated to a 4 and completely effaced. My doctor was planning on going out of town that coming Monday for Spring break and because I was in preterm labor he and the perinatologist decided that the boys were coming.. TODAY!
Marty and I were SO excited (and I might've been a little nervous.. I'd never had surgery or even been admitted to the hospital before.. except for when I was born over 22 years ago). Apparently a lot of babies decided to come that day so Marty and I had to be a little patient since I wasn't in full labor.. Our two sweet little boys arrived at 4:50pm and 4:53pm starting off with Colten weighing 4 pounds 10 ounces followed by Carter at 4 pounds 12 ounces. Marty was with me during my c-section but once both boys were out he followed them into the other room. Fortunately I had two fantastic doctors that helped me feel very comfortable and relaxed during the procedure. Lucky for me I knew the anesthesiologist which helped a lot! Plus I also go to have one of my sisters in the room with me! That's right! Aunt Angie got to take Carter from the doctor and take care of him after he was born. It was nice to have so many loved ones in the room with me. Not to mention all the other loved ones in the other room who weren't able to be in with us but were watching close by.
I had to wait a few hours after to see my boys. I couldn't move my legs.. at ALL. That is quite a strange feeling. I didn't like it. Marty stayed with the boys in the NICU while I had other visitors who came and saw me. I was able to go down and see our boys later that evening probably around 8pm. I was quite slow and a little felt dizzy but I wasn't letting that stop me from seeing my boys. I found aunt Angie and Marty with them. Carter had to be intubated to help him with breathing. Colt was doing a little better but still needed help. They were born at 36 weeks which is average for twins. We knew there was a chance they'd have to go to NICU but secretly we hoped not.. We are glad aunt Angie got to take care of them though. We knew they'd be in great hands.
I was discharged on Friday and it was nice to be at home in my own bed. It was a little tricky to get out of bed though lol. Marty and I went back to the hospital 3 times a day if not more some days. It was hard to leave our little boys there. We felt like something was missing and we hated it. I was able to join Marty Saturday at Becca and Phil's wedding ceremony and reception. It was beautiful and I'm glad I was able to see it, celebrate with everyone and enjoy the company of family.
Colt and Carter were discharged from the NICU after 1 week!! Marty and I were Extremely happy! It was hard having them there for one week. I can't imagine what it'd be like for weeks or even months for some parents. :( Since Wednesday they have been eating well and seem to be growing stronger. They have started to fuss a little at night and I've noticed their cries are getting louder and louder. We are both very happy to hear that! Even though it makes it harder to sleep. We have an appointment with our doctor this week and we are looking forward to it to see if the boys are gaining weight. We are amazed at how many diapers we have gone through already!! So we are hoping!!
We have had lots of company to help us welcome our little munchkins. We are grateful to all who have come to visit them and to see us as well! We love all of you!!
