When I found out Marty was doing a canyon that happened to be the Subway and that I was invited.. I was determined to make it happen. I had never done the Subway or the Das Boot route for that matter. Thursday, after finding two different sitters, we loaded up and were on our way toward Zion. You actually don't enter the park for this one - its turn off is a little before the park. We met another group there: Brent (who Marty has been doing slot canyons all summer with for research), Crystal (his wife), Chris Lasater (who we've both known for years and years), and his wife Alicia.
The Das Boot route is a variation side canyon that drops into the Subway drainage. It was a little tricky for us to find since Marty had never done it. We never had to backtrack but there were a few times we had to stop and check our directions and discuss what we each thought. Once we found it we stopped and had lunch before dropping into the slot. It was a beautiful hike in and not too bad either. The water was ice cold in the slots though but fortunately mostly clean since it had just flashed two days or so before.
There were a few awkward rappels but I remembered quickly. Marty says I did excellent and he was happy to have me along. It was a very enjoyable canyon and exceptionally beautiful! I only have a few pictures as the other girls in our group were quick to pull out their cameras and snap pictures so I may have to add some later..
